This wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri,) known as ono in Hawaiian, was caught on a snorkel trip off Lāna‘i, Hawaii on April 6, 2022 by Steve Gulick. Ono typically run from around late March to June, and this fish was one of the first of the 2022 season! After losing a Mahi mahi on my fishing trip, we discussed gyotaku and my artform of fish printing. We were both disappointed that I would not be able to print the Mahi that we lost. I believe that good things come to good people, so Steve was able to land this beauty on a snorkel trip soon after! I feel so fortunate to be a part of this story and I love when my clients have a deep appreciation for the ocean, its creatures, and its provisions! Wahoo are prized sport fish and are most often caught via trolling. This species is not typically targeted by commercial fisheries and is therefore not considered to be overfished at all. Wahoo are delicious as sashimi, poke, ceviche and fish tacos! The actual lure used to catch this fish was included!
