This beautiful blue goatfish (Parupeneus cyclostomus) is known as Moano ’ukali ulua in Hawaiian and Moana kali locally. This one was speared by our friend Kaulana, off the coast of Lana’i with a perfect kill shot! We were out spearfishing with a group of friends when a huge rainstorm came out of nowhere. We had swim fast and run back to the truck with all of our gear to escape the storm and get to higher ground before we all got stuck in the mud. We went home fishless that day, other than Kaulana’s catch that we printed and then he ate! These goatfish often cruise around the sea floor in “hunting parties” which can include eels, jacks and other species of fish. They use their whisker-like barbels to search for food. Moana kali are a prize fish amongst many spearfishermen. They make a great local steamed dish which includes bok choy, onions, garlic, ginger and hot oil!
