This little Threadfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon Auriga,) Kikakapu in Hawaiian, was the unfortunate victim of bycatch. It was accidentally snagged by a young fishermen who was fishing for more edible species. Butterflyfish do not often feed on bait, but since it did and then perished by accident, I did print it before retuning it to the ocean. This gorgeous little specimen made an adorable little print. Butterflyfish are reef fish that are often yellow, black and white. They also often have markings that are used to confuse predators, such as the dark “false eye- spot” on the base of the tail and dark stripes hiding the actual eye.
